So it’s December 1st and I am now feeling the holiday stress! My stress is a multitude of many things such as money, holiday weight gain, work overload teacher stress…(Don’t even get me started on teacher stress)…and the list goes on…
Besides the typical holiday stressors, I have major book nerd stressors! There are two stressors that affect me greatly and they are centered around GoodReads and now recently BookTube! Now I worship these platforms that cater to the book community but they often bring me unnecessary stress over the holidays!
Every year in January I am always so excited when I am setting up my reading goal in Goodreads for the year and then at the end of the year I end up stressing myself out trying to meet that reading goal instead of enjoying the love of just simply reading!
There seems to be so much pressure to meet our often ridiculous Goodreads reading goals! It also creates so much competition when you see your other Goodreads friends finishing their reading goals way before December! Now I am not saying that competition is bad but for some of us, it can take away why we love to read in the first place. Maybe some of you always conquer your Goodreads goals and you do it with ease but unfortunately, I am not one of those people.
Now about a year ago, I really fell deep into the BookTube world and I have to say that it has been my blessing and my curse! The only things I actually watch every day consist of Netflix and BookTube! BookTube has become my unhealthy addiction but it fills up my book nerd heart with so much bookish glee! I live for mornings where I can have a cup of coffee and watch booktubers talk about their TBR’s for the month, book series that they have read, book castings, and adore those book unboxings!
As much as I am obsessed with BookTube it has created much more of a disaster for me because I never feel that I am caught up with all the trends! I tried to get on the Sarah J. Mass train and read the ACOTAR series and that just never happened! And I am still upset with myself about not reading the ACOTAR series because most of the time many books get compared to this series and if it wasn’t for BookTube… I wouldn’t even care!
Even though I love all these bookish platforms they can be overwhelming but at the end of the day, I have to stop myself and remember that there is no need to compare myself to others reading goals. I know that I love consuming books and I have been a dedicated bibliophile ever since I learned how to read! Just because I haven’t read 100 books for the year doesn’t mean I am not a reader!
Book friends don’t let the book reading competition get to you like it does with me! Also please don’t let other bibliophiles tell you that you don’t read enough and show off how much they read and how they always make the “TIME” to read! Smack them with one of those horrid 50 Shades of Grey books and boot them out of your life! The most important thing is the love and passion for reading whether it’s ten books read for the year, five, or even one!
