My excitement for the annual Miami Book Fair was at an ultra-high especially since I didn’t get to attend the book fair last year!
There were so many YA author events going on at the same time where scheduling was difficult and there were many YA authors that I missed that I would have loved to meet! As much as I adore the Miami Book Fair, it would be nice if they announced all the YA author events on their website in one section so I could make sure to schedule myself in the best way possible for next time!
I was at the Miami Book Fair for two days on Saturday and Sunday! The weekend was pure book heaven for me!
My first day in the Miami Book Fair was by far my favorite day! My only complaint about that day is that I missed the book talk that they gave which is Witchy Women: Modern Fantastical Witch Stories! And it’s all my fault because I was running on Cuban time!
This witchy panel would have been great inspiration for my witchy novel! Oh well! Hoping for next time!
All the book panels were moderated by my dear book friend and book club member Aurora Dominguez! She did an amazing job with moderating the authors and I loved how she kept her questions very open-ended!
So my first book panel was with Mercedes Lackey’s Apex, Anna Banks’ Ally, and Michael Buckley’s Heart of the Storm! This panel was centered on books that were action-packed YA fantasies! All of these book panels was a book panel of firsts for me since I have never read any of these authors. All of these authors offered excellent advice about writing and I particularly loved listening to Anna Banks and Michael Buckley speak!
After the book panel was over I received a YA arc read from Anna Banks by a really sweet book club friend! I was able to get my book signed by Anna Banks who was very gracious!
Since Anna Banks and Michael Buckley offered such helpful book advice in the panel I decided to ask them about my own witchy YA book that I am writing. I was super nervous when I came up to them about my book because I tend to get very secretive about the things that I create but I felt that they would be the people to ask. They were so amazing in answering my question and I felt so satisfied that I asked them. I am just so relieved that they didn’t laugh at me! Phew!
Right afterward, I bumped into one of my favorite children book characters of all time and the one guy that graces the walls of my first-grade classroom…Pete the Cat! Can you say fangirling?
Of course, it wouldn’t be a book event without compulsive book shopping!
The next book panel was my favorite because there are two books that I really want to read from this panel. The panel is named Mystery, Murder, and Deception: Page-Turning Suspense Thrillers! In this panel, the authors that were present were Maggie Thrash’s Strange Lies, Lynn Weingarten’s Bad Girls with Perfect Faces, and Julie Shepard’s Rosie Girl. The books that I am really interested in reading are Bad Girls with Perfect Faces because it’s about the dark things that happen when you pretend to pose as someone else and Rosie Girl because it’s about a girl who goes on a great adventure to find her birth mother. I did a book signing with Julie Shepard and she was such a lovely person to meet!
After the book panels of the day were over I had a nice little photo op with my book club buds!
Also, I randomly bumped into my grandpa at the book event and we had a great time perusing the book booths and he actually bought me the National Book Award YA book Far From the Tree and they even had a book signing…which I missed! (Hence the reason why there needs to be a YA section in the Miami Book Fair website!)
My second day at the book fair was short and definitely sweet! I went to two book panels but the main one that I will just be focusing on is the one with Kiersten White! You heard right Kiersten White!
I spent the day with Aurora Dominguez and she gave me the awesome opportunity of being backstage with all the authors where I got free coffee and yummy vegetable lasagna! Thank you, Aurora!
The book panel with Kiersten White was titled The Beast Within: Dark Fantasy Stories and it showcased authors Emmy Laybourne’s Berserker, S.J. Kincaid’s The Empress, and the highlight of the panel Kiersten White’s Now I Rise! This was my favorite book panel because I love how eloquently the authors expressed themselves in the book panel! Emmy Laybourne had a great little speech about how much she loves the book community and S.J. Kincaid gave an amazing book reading of her book! Also on a side note for those of you that don’t know Emmy Laybourne played the best friend of Molly Shannon in the movie Superstar! I wanted to get my book signed by her but after the book panel she totally split! #bummer
Of course, hearing Kiersten White speak was just amazing and I love her insight about how girls are so underappreciated in our society today and how the things that girls love isn’t taken seriously. Hearing White speak about women issues in such a thoughtful way just warmed my little feminist heart! I have never read any of White’s books but knowing that she takes the historical account of Vlad the Impaler and makes the character a woman named Lada instead sounds like a book I need to start reading asap!
Of course, I got to do a book signing with Kiersten White! She is even more amazing in person and I loved how she recognized my Francesca Lia Block shirt and has read Weetzie Bat! It’s normally very rare for me to meet a person that has read Weetzie Bat and once I meet that person they have to be my best friend! She was my favorite person to meet and can’t wait to delve into her books!
After the book panels, I went with Aurora to the DRB which is close to the book fair and our day ended with books and beer! The best combo if you ask me!
My weekend at the book fair was so memorable because this was the first book fair where I attended YA book panels! I felt very overwhelmed planning the book fair and I hope to get better organized to planning the book fair for next year!
My heart is so full and happy because I have a new bag filled with books from new YA authors that I am so excited to read! I don’t know where I am going to put all these books I accumulated but frankly, I don’t care! Looking forward to next years Miami Book Fair 2018! Comment below and let me know if you have read any of these authors and if you have been to any book fairs as of late!
