Greetings from Fredericksburg, Virginia! I am here visiting my parents for the holidays and it is freaking cold! At this very moment, it is snowing outside and this little Floridian only went out for a solid five minutes to walk around the snow! Yesterday, I went to Williamsburg, Virginia and it was in the 20’s and my hands were literally frozen after two milliseconds!
Williamsburg, VA was an absolute winter wonderland and I had an amazing time visiting and not to mention this lovely cup of hot buttered cider was everything!
During my trip, I convinced my parents to have a holiday readathon with me due to the fact that I NEVER have time to do a readathon when I am not on vacation! These are the books we choose for our Winter Readathon 2017!
My dad is a big non-fiction historical guy so he chose the book Franklin and Winston. I chose the holiday short story book My True Love Gave to Me, Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo, and Doll Bones by Holly Black! My mom loves Lauren Graham ever since I got her into Gilmore Girls so she chose the book Someday, Someday, Maybe and a beachy book called Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm. But first, you can’t have a readathon without breakfast!
After breakfast we went out for a grocery run to the Giant and then settled in, revved up our heating blankets, and got our read on!
When the readathon was over my mom and I finished approximately one book! My dad’s historical non-fiction book Franklin and Winston was the kind of book that was more appropriate to finish within a week than within a day! The book had a lot of military obscure terms that takes some time to get into! My mom finished the book Turtles in Paradise and I finished the short story holiday collection of My True Love Gave to Me!
And as for Ringo…well, he finished only one page of his Raggedy Andy Adventures!
My True Love Gave to Me was a delightful read and what I loved most about the book is that I was introduced to some authors that I have never read a book from before! My favorite stories were from Rainbow Rowell, Matt de la Peña, Stephanie Perkins, Kiersten White, and Ally Carter! Some of the stories were fun light holiday reads like Rainbow Rowell and some were really intense reads like Matt de la Peña’s. And some were a real doozy like Kelly Link and Laini Taylor’s stories.
Speaking of Laini Taylor’s story I have no idea why the heck this story was considered to be the last?! Why not put other light holiday stories to cap it off?! You have no idea the torture I had to endure to finish this story! And don’t get me wrong I love magical realism reads and I intend to read Laini Taylor’s Stranger the Dreamer but the magical realism stories that I read from Laini Taylor and Kelly Link were just disappointing. Sorry but it was just awful…great writing but the stories were just an unequivocal bore.Reading Laini Taylor’s story was like being stuck in a snowstorm with no electricity!
The last holiday short story collection that I read was Let it Snow and I found the stories in this collection much lighter and gave me more of the holiday feels than My True Love Gave to Me.
This month of December, I have watched way too many Hallmark Christmas movies and I was just in the mood for cozy little holiday reads! Unfortunately, I didn’t get the Hallmark feels with some of the stories in this collection!
The Sweetest Christmas (Favorite Hallmark movie! Anything with love and gingerbread is a winner for me!)
Since we ran some errands during the day and I woke up at 10 in the morning I didn’t get to read more than one book like I anticipated but that is why I always try to attempt to schedule in monthly readathons! I am glad I got to finish up one book though! I am not going to reach my Goodreads challenge of 50 books but that is why we have New Year’s resolutions right?!
Let’s hope the next one there are no errands or distractions to get in the way and I could actually finish reading more than one book! Looking forward to readbyzoe next readathon and hope to join in this time instead of creating my own! How was your holiday readathon? Did you get to read more than one book? Comment below I would love to read about your experiences!
