Lanky Lizards!!! Weetzie Bat is going to be a freaking movie!!!
If anyone asks me what my favorite book is I will unequivocally say Weetzie Bat! Weetzie Bat changed my life when I was only sixteen years old! When I opened up to the first page of this glittery and poetic masterpiece, I was literally sucked into the fantastical sugary world of Weetzie Bat.
This book fills me with delirious happiness and it reminds me to look at the beauty of life even in the most devastating moments. Many people take one look at Weetzie Bat and think that it is a children’s book and this couldn’t be further from the truth. This book is one of the most celebrated iconic YA magical realism novels that was published in 1989. (I was only five years old!) It is a punk fairy tale set in sparkly California known as Shangri La and it is about a girl named Weetzie Bat who discovers love and learns the way that love could change her. This book is about finding the light within yourself even through the darkness.
Weetzie Bat is the kind of book that you have to read because the synopsis doesn’t do the book enough justice. It’s the kind of book that you want to be pleasantly surprised by without knowing too much about it. This book could be read within a day but it’s the kind of book you want to take your time with because the language is so lush and vivid…
I am hoping that the Weetzie Bat movie will influence more people to read this life-altering book! I have been waiting for this movie to come to life for eighteen years…
Through this very long wait, I have devoured everything that Francesca Lia Block writes and I even had the incredible opportunity to do a writing seminar with her at her home in California back in 2009 when I was a tiny little 20-something year old!
There were many times where a Weetzie Bat movie was in the “works” but it always fell through. Back in 2012, there was a bookstore reading with Chelsea Kane starring as Weetzie Bat and it was freaking adorable! See the bookstore script reading here.
When they announced the official cast for Weetzie Bat I thought that Chelsea Kane was going to be Weetzie Bat but they announced the new indie star Anya Taylor Joy. Even though, it won’t be Chelsea Kane I am very intrigued by this actress because she definitely has a resemblance to the character! Nick Robinson who is in like every YA movie is going to star as Weetzie Bat’s love interest My Secret Agent Lover Man! And I am uber excited for Sasha Lane who is a very gifted indie actress to play the role of the “other” woman as Vixanne! Seeing Sasha Lane in American Honey was captivating! Honestly, I can’t control myself and I am still in shock over this movie announcement! I never thought this day would come! I am going to be posting many updates about this movie so bear with me! This is like my Twilight/Harry Potter!
Now all I ask is that you please read this book if you haven’t read it so we could talk all about it and obsess over the upcoming movie! If you’re a magical realism reader and you are obsessed with California please read this book! Let me know your thoughts about the movie in the comments below!
