I know this is old news for all of you Jenny Han fans but I have been meaning to write a post about the new movie adaptation of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before since the July announcement! I can’t begin to put into words how this series has made me feel so deliriously happy!
The characters in this book were written with such heart, humor, and quirkiness that I just couldn’t get enough. I love the pure innocence and sweetness of Lara Jean and how she was always true to herself no matter what! The strong relationship she has with her sisters and father was so adorably heartwarming and touching to read. There aren’t many YA novels out there that focus on the family dynamic and it was truly refreshing to be a part of it. It was like watching an episode of Full House minus all the cheesiness of it and replaced by true and unadulterated charm!
The relationship that develops between Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean was nothing but sweetness and it gave me nothing but an utter toothache! They were just the cutest and the development of the romance was so organic and not “insta-lovey.” Reading about Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky was just magical and I am thrilled to actually finally see it played it out on the movie screen!
I was so freaking excited when I heard that the Lara Jean story was going to be a movie that I literally squealed like a typical 13-year-old fangirl!
I think that the cast is perfection for the most part. After the movie announcement, there has been a huge controversy with the casting of Lara Jean in the movie. There are a lot of complaints that the actress Lana Candor who is played by Lara Jean is a misrepresentation of the book. Lana Candor is Vietnamese American and the character Lara Jean is Korean American. Honestly, the fact that there are three Asian American women in a film together is a huge leap in a major Hollywood movie and it doesn’t bother me that Lana Candor is playing the part of a Korean American character. This is a first for a major Hollywood movie and hopefully, Hollywood will continue to push the boundaries and continue to represent different nationalities instead of “white washing” their roles.
Now I have to say that the only thing that I have to complain about is the actor Noah Centineo who is the actor that is playing Peter Kavinsky! Noah Centineo has the look like he is more fitted to play the role of a pot head high school dropout than the role of a dreamy and all around outgoing popular guy in school!
No joke but I actually pictured someone like Harry Styles to play Peter Kavinsky! Harry Styles is someone who is sweet and approachable with a bad boy player side like Mr. Kavinsky! I have tried to keep an open mind about Noah Centineo and even watched a few YouTube clips of him in The Fosters tv show and he is just not doing it for me at all! Hopefully, when I get to watch the movie he will change my opinion! What do you think about the movie adaptation To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and the casting of Peter Kavinsky? Comment below with your thoughts!
